We’re excited to share updates on our ongoing biodiversity and conservation efforts here at Holiday Resort Unity. As summer arrives and the weather warms, it's hard not to notice the incredible wildlife and the variety of plants and flowers that thrive across our resort.
Our dedicated teams work tirelessly to uphold our Gold David Bellamy Award status, which inspires us to adopt a new ‘Pledge for Nature’ each year. We proudly present our progress to a David Bellamy Site Auditor every three years.
Last year, we embraced the ‘Tree-mendous’ and ‘Pollinator Patch’ pledges. Our Greenkeepers planted over 80 trees, including Mugo Pine, chosen for its ability to prevent soil erosion while providing a sanctuary for birds and wildlife. Our Gardeners also added over 150 hawthorn hedges around the holiday home caravans. Additionally, we spread nectar-rich wildflower seeds across various areas of the golf course. These flowers have started to bloom, providing essential food for local pollinators and bees. Plus, since these wildflower zones require less mowing and watering than traditional lawns, we’re conserving water, electricity, and fuel, helping reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
In recent months, we’ve been lucky to spot a wide range of birds, mammals, and insects, including red kites, sparrowhawks, dragonflies, newts, deer, and other small mammals. These sightings remind us of the beauty of our surroundings and the importance of preserving our resort’s natural environment for future generations.
That’s why for 2024, we’re taking on the ‘Everyone Active’ pledge, which will introduce more nature-based activities for our visitors and teams throughout the year.
We’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of the David Bellamy team later this month and are excited to continue making strides in our biodiversity and conservation efforts!
